Schumer Calls for Legislation as Key Solution for AI Regulation

The race to regulate the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence has taken a legislative turn, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasizing Congress's crucial role. While President Joe Biden is set to issue an executive order on AI, Schumer asserts that it is only through congressional action that the nation can establish comprehensive AI guidelines.

At a Washington Post event, Schumer highlighted the limitations of executive orders and the necessity for legislative groundwork to enforce AI regulations, proposing a federal investment of up to $32 billion for AI safety measures. As Schumer bluntly puts it, "If the government doesn't do it, no one will."

This assertion comes as the U.S. is recognized as a leader in AI innovation, capturing over 70% of global private funding in 2023. With tech giants like Google and Meta at the forefront of AI research, the call for regulation gains urgency. Schumer's call to action resounds as he insists, "everyone admits the only real answer is legislative."
